The ghats of Varanasi at dawn

Varanasi

The oldest living city on earth. Ganga, ghats, and a soul that never sleeps.

Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh
Varanasi doesn't welcome you. It absorbs you. No city on earth carries this weight of time โ€” 3,000 years of continuous civilisation, all compressed into a thin ribbon of ghats along the Ganga. To visit is to be changed.
The city

Where time runs differently

Varanasi is the world's oldest continuously inhabited city. Every lane, every ghat, every turning has a story that predates recorded history.

The ghats of Varanasi stretch 7 kilometres along the Ganga โ€” each one with its own character, its own ritual, its own reason to exist. Dashashwamedh Ghat erupts each evening into the spectacular Ganga Aarti, a choreographed prayer of fire and devotion.

The Kashi Vishwanath Temple, the legendary lassi shops of the old city, the silk weavers of Varanasi โ€” these are not tourist attractions. They are the living fabric of a city that has been doing exactly this for millennia.

Varanasi doesn't need to try. It simply is. And Avarna wants to build a home right in the middle of it.

When to go to Varanasi

Varanasi is extraordinary in every season โ€” but some seasons are more extraordinary than others.

โœฆ Ideal

October โ€” February

Cool, pleasant, and alive with festivals. Dev Deepawali in November turns the ghats into a river of light. The best time to be here โ€” period.

Manageable

March โ€” May

Getting warm. Holi in March is spectacular โ€” one of the best in India. By May the heat is serious, but the city never stops.

Challenging

June โ€” September

Monsoon season. The Ganga swells dramatically โ€” beautiful in its own way, but the humidity and flooding can complicate travel. Not for first-timers.
