A former French colony with a character entirely its own — Pondicherry is one of India's most distinctive and underrated cities.
The White Town (Ville Blanche) is the colonial heart — mustard-yellow bungalows with bougainvillea spilling over iron gates, French street signs, and a seafront promenade that catches the Bay of Bengal wind. It's arrestingly beautiful.
Sri Aurobindo Ashram anchors the spiritual identity of the city, drawing seekers from across the world. The nearby township of Auroville — a utopian experiment begun in 1968 — is like nowhere else on earth.
The food is extraordinary — a unique hybrid of Chettinad spice and French technique. The beaches are clean, the beer is cheap (Pondicherry is a Union Territory with different excise rules), and the streets are quiet at 5am in a way that invites walking.
When to go to Pondicherry
October — February
Cool and dry. The city is at its most beautiful — comfortable enough to walk everywhere. The Northeast Monsoon brings occasional rain in October–November but it's brief.
March — May
Getting warm. March is still lovely. By April–May the heat is serious, but the sea breeze makes evenings bearable. Perfect for Auroville visits — less crowded.
June — September
Southwest Monsoon season. The sea is rough and swimming is inadvisable. The city is lush and green but humid. A quieter, more atmospheric version of Pondy — for the adventurous.
How to reach Pondicherry
By Air
Chennai International Airport (MAA) is the closest hub, 150 km away. 2.5-hour drive or take the train to Villupuram and connect. Direct taxis from Chennai airport to Pondy: ~3 hours.
By Train
Pondicherry Railway Station has limited but direct trains from Chennai (3 hrs). Most travellers take a train to Villupuram (38 km) and then a bus or cab to Pondicherry.
By Road
From Chennai: 3 hours via NH45. From Bengaluru: 6 hours. The East Coast Road from Chennai to Pondy is one of India's most scenic coastal drives — worth taking slowly.
